| Passive
Formation of a passive verb
A verb in the active form is made passive by introducing the corresponding tense of the verb " to be " and by changing the form of the active verb to its past participle . Ex = takes >is taken has admired >has been admired is reading >is being read
Auxiliary Verbs
With auxiliary verbs the infinitive form of the main verb is converted into the passive infinitive. Ex : They must send these books >These books must be sent
| Important points about the structure of the sentence
1) The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive one. 2) When the subject of the passive sentence is plural, the verb must be put into the plural form 3) The tense of the verb remains the same [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذه الصورة] Omission or inclusion of agents
Two important rules : 1) The agent is omitted when it's a personal or indefinite pronoun ( I, they, someone, nobody ...... ) 2) The agent is included when it's important for the understanding of the sentence 3) The agent is omitted when it doesn't include a new element in the sentence Ex : The workers repaired the bridge >The bridge was repaired (we know the workers did it) [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذه الصورة] Passive with two objects
Some verbs can include two objects ( direct and indirect). In such a situation, the indirect object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive sentence . The direct object ( of the active verb) remains the direct object of the passive sentence. Ex: Someone told me a funny story >I was told a funny story [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذه الصورة] Place of the Preposition
The preposition comes directly after the verb ex: Who was Les Miserables written by ? He was looked at in a strange way. [ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذه الصورة]
