| INTERROGATIVES
There are two types of interrogatives : 1.Without question words 2.With question words
Type 1 Such questions are formed by simple inversion of the subject and verb or subject and auxiliary verb. E.g. Did you go to Batna yesterday?
Type 2 If the interrogative pronoun is the subject of the sentence, there is no inversion and no auxiliary ‘do’. E.g. Who played Tennis? Who is coming this afternoon? Salhi and Maarouf.
If the question word is the object of the sentence, inversion does take place and if no other auxiliary verb is used, the correct form of ‘do’ is added. E.g. What does she like? Which book does she like? (which implies a limited choice)
With prepositions, it is advisable to place the preposition immediately after the verb E.g. What was he listening to? Who/ whom did you speak to?
| There are a number of question words that you need to know 1.what? What kind, what sort, what (time, day, etc…)
2.what … like what is … like, what does ….. look like, what does …..smell like, etc….
3.how how deep, how far, how high, how late, how long, how many, how much, how often, how old, how tall, how wide 4.when 5.why 6.who, whom
